Assignments for Friday, Sept. 20, 2013

  • Read PA 51-73
  • Study and learn these vocabulary words: acquiescence, authoritarian, copious, deprivation, egalitarian, evangelical, hierarchy, infanticide, polyamory, polyandry, polygamy, regime, scarcity
  • Read “One Man, Many Wives, Big Problems
  • Be prepared to discuss all assigned readings in class
  • Read the plagiarism chapter in LBH
  • Bring these two completed exercises to class: Safe practices and the final three exercises here (Here's an extra credit question: Was our use of the first five of these exercises in class today plagiarism?). Also, here is a good treatment of avoiding plagiarism, especially in showing how to use one citation for an entire paragraph.

  1. Mr. Stanley,
I don't think that the exercises we used in class classify as plagiarism. Can something be plagiarized in a discussion about plagiarisms? In talking about the first five of the exercises are you supposed to stop and cite the work that we are discussing?

  2. Good point. In the case of our exercises, it might not be a very good idea to tell the class ahead of time where the exercises came from, because then students could simply go and look at the answers without actually doing the work of thinking through the problems themselves. On the other hand, if I never
tell the class, at least after we were finished, where I got the exercises, then I would be passing off someone else's work as my own. Thanks for commenting.
